Luxury Retreat Plan

Concept Let yourself surrender to nature and set yourself free! -Itoman Fishermen's culture and the Blessings of Itoman.

The old lunar calendar culture, living with the tides and the moon, remains deeply in the town of Itoman, which has been around since the Ryukyu Kingdom era.
The fishermen (Uminchu) who live by the sea have built this town.

Let yourself surrender to the nature of Itoman.
Surrounded by the sea breeze and greenery that the fishermen of old once felt,
while looking out at uninhabited islands like Aegina Island, protected by the sea god (Watatsumi),
you will receive energy from the blessings of Itoman.

The sense of discomfort you feel in your daily life will gradually dissolve as you experience the energy of this extraordinary time, allowing that discomfort to gradually "return."

  • Point 01 Sailing Sabani
Sailing a traditional wooden fishing boat, a Sabani!
We head for the uninhabited island of Aegina.
"Sabani" the boats used by fishermen in Itoman. Widely used throughout Okinawa Prefecture, these Sabani are known to have originated here in Itoman. Before engines became widespread, these sabani were put on sails and set out on the open sea. We set out for Aegina Island, the sacred island watched over by the sea god, in a precious sabani made by a boat builder still active in Itoman.
  • Point 02 To Worship to Aegina Island and Wish you success
When we arrive at Aegina Island,
First to say hello to the Sea God and worship to Aegina Island and Wish you success.
The entrance to Aegina Island was once the site of a castle (castle ruins) called Nashiro Castle Ruins, and because there was a shell mound and a place of worship at the entrance, it was both a settlement and a sacred area. Across from there, Aegina Island has long been known as a "divine island," and people have been offering worship to the island from the square in front of the castle ruins. On this tour, we will be offering worship to Aegina Island from the sea side.
  • Point 03 Sunset Dinner
"The bounty of the sea of Itoman can only be enjoyed in Okinawa's leading fishing town."
It is said that the seafood served in the hospitality cuisine of the Ryukyu Kingdom era was caught here in Itoman. The Itoman cuisine that filled the hearts of such important people will be specially arranged by the chef to add even more energy. Dinner will be held at the private beach, Puchi Puchi Beach. The calm, horizontal sunset and magic hour will create a wonderful setting for dinner time.
  • Point 04 Tour of the Sabani artisan workshop
Visiting the Itoman Sabani craftsman's workshop.
You can look the inheritance of traditional shipbuilding techniques.
We will visit the workshop of Kiyoshi Oshiro, a leading expert on Itoman Sabani, who has continued to make Sabani in Itoman City. It is said that the basic form of Itoman City's traditional Sabani technique was created around 1880 during the Meiji Era (1868-1912). Currently, the Obi cedar produced in Miyazaki Prefecture is used to make the Obi cedar, which is strong and flexible. Visitors will learn about the Sabani while watching craftsmen at work up close.
  • Point 05 Make your own chopsticks
"Make your own chopsticks using scraps of wood that are used to make traditional fishing boats!"
The wood used to make Sabani is Obi cedar grown in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture. Obi cedar has been widely used to build wooden ships. It is characterized by its strength, flexibility, and toughness. On this tour, you will use scraps from the Sabani workshop to make your own chopsticks. In about 30 minutes, you will have completed your one-of-a-kind chopsticks, filled with the history and memories of Itoman.

Plan 3 Sabani (fishing boat) experience & fisherman light meal plan

Let yourself surrender to nature and set yourself free!
-Itoman Fishermen's culture and the Blessings of Itoman.

This plan will take you to a deserted island on a Sabani (traditional fishing boat) and let you enjoy Fishermen's light meal.

  • Point 01 Sailing Sabani (fishing boat)
"Board a traditional wooden fishing boat, a Sabani (fishing boat)!
We head for the uninhabited island of Aegina."
Sabani was used by fishermen in Itoman. This sabani was widely used by fishermen throughout Okinawa Prefecture, and Itoman City is known as its birthplace. Before engines became widespread, this sabani was put on sails and set out on the open sea. We set out for Aegina Island, a sacred island watched over by the sea god, on a precious sabani (fishing boat) made by a boat builder still active in Itoman.
  • Point 02 Aegina Island worship
When we arrive at Aegina Island,
First to say hello to the Sea God and worship to Aegina Island and Wish you success.
At the entrance to Aegina Island, there used to be a castle (gusuku) called Nashiro Castle Ruins, and because there was a shell mound and a place of worship at the entrance, it was both a settlement and a sacred area. Across from there, Aegina Island has long been known as a "divine island," and people would offer homage to the island from the square in front of the castle ruins. On this tour, you will be offering homage to Aegina Island from the sea side.
  • Point 03 Experience Itoman fisherman's meal
Easy fisherman's meal: Bomb rice balls are delicious!
The accompaniment for the Sabani experience is the "Bomb Onigiri" (rice balls wrapped in fish paste and deep-fried), which was developed as something that fishermen could easily eat on board the boat. There are various theories about the origin of the dish, but one theory is that it took advantage of the fish paste that is unique to fishing towns and was highly valued as something that could be easily eaten while fishing. Even today, some kamaboko shops in the prefecture sell "Bomb Onigiri" as a local specialty. With a Bomb Onigiri in hand, let's get going!
